Egypt’s annual urban inflation rises to 5.6% in June: CAPMAS

Egypt’s consumer price index for urban consumers (CPI-U) increased to 5.6% in June, compared to 4.7% in May, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) said on Thursday.

The agency added, in its monthly inflation report, that the whole country’s CPI inched down to 107.5 points in June, registering a slight decrease of 0.1% from May.

CAPMAS attributed the CPI decline to the decrease in meat and poultry prices by 5.6%; vegetables by 5.5%; fish and seafood by 2.9%; dairy, cheese, and eggs by 1.9%; cereals and bread by 0.6%; and hotel services by 0.3%.

Other consumer goods witnessed price hike, including fruits by 18.8%, tobacco by 4.2%, garments by 1.2%, outpatient services by 1.8%, takeaways by 0.9%, and personal care products by 1.0%.

According to CAPMAS, the annual headline inflation recorded 6% in June 2020, up from 5% in May 2020, and 8.9% in June 2019.
