KarmSolar and Karm Constructions have partnered with 25 January Hospital to launch an initiative, entitled “Egypt Care”, to provide open source design of a field intensive care hospital for coronavirus (COVID-19) patients.

According to a statement issued by KarmSolar, the hospital construction costs EGP 13m and takes 15 days to be completed. The hospital’s capacity can reach 192 beds on 16 wards, with each ward having 12 beds. The hospital design considers the different stages of the coronavirus treatment protocol.

Karim Kafrawy, an architect at Karm Constructions, said they defined four main objectives in the design of the hospital. These include an engineering and spatial arrangement for managing infectious diseases, such as the coronavirus, in the facility and the capacity for rapid mobilisation.

Moreover, the construction of the facility relies on ready and locally available building systems and materials. The initiative is also keen to provide easy access to designs and construction methods for any government agency or institution around the world.
