The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker revealed his programme to distribute high accuracy electricity meters in order to unify consumption measurements nationwide by April 2020.

This came during a meeting with the Committee on Energy and Environment in the House of Representatives chaired by Talaat El-Sewedy on Monday, to discuss challenges facing the electricity sector.

Shaker added that the system of recording unified readings began in Port Said Governorate with 250,000 subscribers. The ministry plans to complete the programme’s expansion in surrounding provinces by January, then to rest of the country by April 2020.

“This program will address the problem of fake bills and mistakes in readings that citizens often complain about. Our directives are clear: anyone who makes mistakes will be fired,” he said.

He pointed out that Egypt’s ranking improved in the international reports on the Ease of Doing Business score to get electricity, reaching 77th place, compared to 145th place in 2015.

He explained that the increase in transparency regarding electricity tariffs and the improved efficiency in its production played key roles in Egypt’s improved progress in international reports
