President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi welcomed members of the Egyptian mission to 2018 Mediterranean Games on Tuesday at Ithadya Presidential Palace. Al-Sisi honoured the players who won different medals in the tournament and awarded them Order of Sports Merit (class 1,2,3). Egypt won a total of 45 medals, with 18 gold, 11 silver, and 16 bronze winners.

One hundred-seventy Egyptians competed in 21 games out of the 18th edition of the Mediterranean Games’ 33 sports. The medals put Egypt in the fifth place in the medal table, out of the 25 participating nations.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sport Ashraf Sobhi held his first press conference at the ministry’s headquarters, since he came to office on 14 June, to announce the ministry’s 2018-2022 strategy.

Sobhi said he intends to cooperate with scientific research authorities to develop the sports sector in Egypt, setting a development plan of four axes: first, turning youth centres nationwide into community service centres; second, development, and increasing of youth facilities; third, development of youth activities at new community centres; fourth, economic management of community centres to maximise their revenues.

He noted that his ministry is targeting to develop the country’s football infrastructure with the aim to bid for hosting the 2030 FIFA World Cup.
