Police forces arrested former Freedom and Justice Party (FJP) member Ahmed Mahmoud in Giza Saturday, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The police said the Homeland Security apparatus in Suez and Giza collaborated to arrest Mahmoud, who was hiding the district of Kerdasa.

Mahmoud was a member of dissolved 2013 parliament. The Suez Muslim Brotherhood-affiliated FJP page said Mahmoud was “kidnapped” by security forces and held the police responsible for his health.

He was sentenced at the beginning of the year to 15 years in prison on charges of committing violence following the Rabaa Al-Adaweya sit-in dispersal in 2013.

Last week, the Egyptian government seized the FJP headquarters in Suez, as well as several businesses proven to have belonged to Brotherhood members.

A state-led crackdown on the Brotherhood has been ongoing since the military ouster of Islamist president Morsi in July 2012. Local and international human rights organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, have repeatedly condemned the crackdown.

In December 2013, Egypt’s government declared the Brotherhood as a terrorist organisation. Similarly, Egypt has outlawed both the Brotherhood and its political arm, the FJP.
